How Does a Reiki Attunement Work? What It Feels Like and Why It Matters

If you’re exploring the world of Reiki and you're feeling called to learn it, one question tends to come up early:

How does a Reiki attunement work?

And just as important, what does it actually feel like, and does it really make a difference?

Let’s strip it back and talk about all things attunement.

What is a Reiki Attunement?

A Reiki attunement is the process that allows you to connect to Reiki energy.

The word attune means “to bring into harmony.” In Reiki, it’s about aligning your energy system so you can access and channel Reiki for yourself and others.

It’s also known as an initiation, because it marks the beginning of your Reiki path; not just something you do, but something you start to live.

Once you’re attuned, that connection stays with you. It’s not something you can switch off or lose over time and you can't be "un-attuned"!

How Does a Reiki Attunement Work?

At each level of Reiki training, you’ll receive an attunement, allowing your system to gradually adjust to the new energy.

Each attunement:

  • Lasts around 6–10 minutes

  • Takes place in a calm, quiet setting

  • Requires nothing from you other than being open to receive

Before it begins, your Reiki Master will ask if you’re ready to go ahead and happy to be attuned. That really matters, because choosing to connect is part of the process.

During the attunement itself, your Reiki Master will gently place their hands on or near your head, hands, and shoulders.

It’s a simple process on the outside, but energetically, it’s about opening your chakras and aligning you with Reiki energy so you can access it yourself.

What Does a Reiki Attunement Feel Like?

This is where expectations can get in the way, because there isn’t one “correct” experience. Everyone responds differently.

You might notice:

  • Warmth or tingling, especially in your hands

  • A sense of energy moving or flowing

  • Seeing colours or light

  • Deep relaxation

  • Emotional release

Or you might not feel much at all during the attunement itself. Both are completely normal; there is no right or wrong.

What matters isn’t how dramatic the experience is, it’s the connection that’s created during and after.

Why Does a Reiki Attunement Matter?

A Reiki attunement is a vital part of your training, because it changes what you’re able to access.

Before an attunement, Reiki is something external and something you receive. After an attunement, it becomes something you can do.

After your attunement you’re able to:

  • Practice Reiki on yourself

  • Support your own emotional and physical wellbeing

  • Begin working with others (as you progress)

  • Deepen your awareness of energy

It’s less about a one-time experience, and more about what opens up afterwards.

What Happens After a Reiki Attunement?

After your attunement, your system begins to adjust. This is often called the 21-day cleansing or harmonising period.

It’s generally positive, but it can feel a bit challenging or unpredictable while your energy settles.

Physical experiences:

  • Feeling more tired (or occasional bursts of energy)

  • Changes in sleep

  • Mild detox symptoms like headaches or digestive shifts

  • Tingling or warmth in your hands

Emotional shifts:

  • Emotions rising unexpectedly

  • Increased sensitivity

  • Moments of clarity or calm

Mental & spiritual changes:

  • Stronger intuition

  • A deeper sense of connection

  • Feeling more grounded or aware

  • Noticing energy more clearly

You might experience some of these, all of them, or hardly any. There's no right or wrong here and everyone's experiences are different.

How to Support Yourself After an Attunement

The best approach is simple: listen to and support your body while it adjusts.

A few things that help:

  • Daily self-Reiki — especially during the first 21 days

  • Hydration — drink plenty of water

  • Eat simply — lighter, more natural foods where possible

  • Rest — listen to your body

  • Ground yourself — walks, nature, baths

  • Journal — track what’s coming up

  • Reduce overstimulation — less screen time if you feel sensitive

Final Thoughts

So, how does a Reiki attunement work?

It’s a process that brings your system into alignment with Reiki energy, allowing you to access it whenever you need it.

The experience itself might be subtle or noticeable, calm or emotional.

But the real impact shows up afterwards — in how you feel, how you respond, and how you begin to connect with yourself on a deeper level.
