What Is the Root Chakra?
The root chakra (Muladhara) is the first of the seven main chakras that run along your spine up to your crown. It represents stability, safety, and grounding. It is the energetic foundation for all the other chakras. It plays quite an important role!
Sanskrit name: Muladhara
Position: Base of the spine
Colour: Red
Element: Earth
Crystals: Red Jasper, Black Tourmaline, Smoky Quartz, Garnet
Body areas: Pelvis, lower back, large intestine, feet, and legs
When your root chakra is open and balanced, you feel safe, grounded, and supported by life. When it’s blocked, you may feel anxious, insecure, or disconnected.

What Causes the Root Chakra to Become Blocked?
Root chakra blockages often stem from:
Unhealed emotions or childhood trauma
Financial or home instability
Fear and anxiety
Chronic stress or burnout
Big life changes that shake your sense of security
Signs of a Blocked Root Chakra
Physical symptoms might include:
Poor sleep
Constipation or bowel issues
Hip or lower back pain
Feeling fatigued or heavy
Emotional symptoms can include:
Insecurity or fear
Feeling restless or ungrounded
Anxiety or fear of failure

How to Unblock Your Root Chakra
The key word is grounding. When in doubt, ground!
Feeling unstable or anxious? Ground.
Feeling disconnected? Ground.
Here are 8 simple and powerful grounding techniques that help unblock your root chakra energy:
Walk barefoot on the grass: Also known as earthing, this helps your body absorb the Earth’s natural electrons, which is proven to reduce inflammation and stress.
Gardening: Connect directly with earth.
Walking in nature: Trees, moss, mud, and fresh air all help rebalance your root chakra.
Hug a tree (yes, really!): In Japan, “forest bathing” (Shinrin-yoku) is prescribed to reduce stress and restore calm.
Be near running water: Rivers, oceans, or waterfalls cleanse chakra energy.
Use a grounding mat or sheet: perfect for rainy days! I use a mat from Down to Ground to re-ground my Reiki clients after their treatment.
Visualise grounding roots: Imagine roots growing from the soles of your feet deep into the Earth’s core, anchoring you.
Practice meditation: Focus on your breath, your feet, your senses, and your connection to the Earth.
How to Unblock Your Root Chakra with Reiki
Reiki healing is one of the most effective and gentle ways to unblock your root chakra.
During a session, Reiki energy flows where it’s most needed, helping to release and disperse energetic blockages, calm the nervous system, and restore balance to your entire chakra system.

Once your root chakra begins to open and flow, keep the energy moving. Regular grounding, meditation, and Reiki treatments prevent blockages from returning. Think of it as energetic maintenance (just like brushing your teeth, but for your aura!).
