Reiki Practice: 5 Reiki-Inspired Practices To Add Calm To Your Daily Life (And They're Free!)

Updated: Sep 5

Reiki practice: 5 simple Reiki-inspired methods to try that won't cost you time or money! Read on for free Reiki practice techniques to help you in your every day.

When you come for your furst Reiki session, we will have a conversation about your overall wellbeing, general lifestyle, and hobbies. This is about figuring out your situational challenges and coming up with a plan tailored to you to help add calm, contentment, and positivity into your daily life between Reiki. I'll make recommendations that will easily fit into your busy lifestyle; this is person-centred and you decide what will and won't work for you. Below are some of my top Reiki healing inspired tips that anyone can do. And the best part? They're free!

A client once said, ‘if you make dinner and it doesn’t taste good, you wouldn't then use the same ingredients next time; you’d make changes’. If you don't make a few small modifications to improve your day-to-day life then no amount of Reiki is going to help. It’s called co-creation.

Reiki will give you a boost of energy, motivation, reduce pain, and improve sleep; all of these will kick-start your desire to make changes.

But Reiki can’t lessen your work stress, or ban social media scrolling, or set boundaries. Only you can do that.

So, how? It all starts with filling your own cup and gaining clarity, peace, and boundaries.

Which of these you choose to try is entirely based on your capacity and what resonates. If it isn’t going to fit easily into your lifestyle then you won’t stick to it, so don’t set yourself up to fall at the first hurdle.

  1. Gratitude

Make a gratitude list to coincide with your Reiki practice.

Make a list (either in your head or write it down) of everything you are grateful for today. Some things we just take for granted because they are always there, so you might think ‘why would we need to thank the reliable?’ but the more you can think of to thank, the higher your vibrations will be. The higher your vibrations, the happier you’ll be.

If you are having a bad day, or feeling miserable, or are in pain, there will still be something, something, to appreciate. You could thank that chipped mug that allows you to drink coffee at 6am before work, be grateful for that putrid-smelling bin that houses all your waste (and maybe clean it), and relish in picking up your cats third poo of the day (seriously, she’s like a dog!) because it’s better than her being constipated, or not being here at all.

I like to do my gratitude at night before I sleep. I will go through everything that’s happened that day and list all the lovely things that I can be thankful for. Wear that coat of gratitude with pride and wear it all day. Use gratitude alongside Reiki healing for optimal benefits.

Gratitude really is endless.

  1. Meditation

Start with guided meditations to prolong the post Reiki practice feeling.

Using meditation between your Reiki healing sessions will encourage that relaxed state to last longer. I'm not saying you need to do an hour of meditation a day. We are not the Dalai Lama. A 5-10 minute meditation is going to switch your brain off and let it rest and heal. Short but frequent meditations are more effective than irregular, longer sessions.

When you meditate you use muscles in your brain that you perhaps aren't used to, so you may find it takes a few goes before it really clicks. Be patient! You wouldn't go to your first gym session and expect to lift the heaviest weight.; you have to train your brain and work up to it.

I personally would recommend guided meditations to start with. You can use the voice and visualisations as your focus. Find free ones on YouTube or use an app (Headspace is a great app and is free for blue light card holders). Look for some that you enjoy listening to. If you find the voice irritating or the music grating then it isn’t going to work for you so try a different one; trial and error.

Please don’t worry about perfection. Some of your meditations will be better than others. You might feel distracted throughout, or miss a day, or not feel like it, and that’s ok. Don’t beat yourself up about it, just carry on tomorrow.

  1. Grounding (earthing)

Ground yourself - especially after participating in a Reiki practice.

Grounding, or earthing, is having direct physical contact with the earth or nature. Practicing grounding helps you reconnect with the present moment, reduces inflammation, improves sleep, lowers blood pressure, and increases emotional stability. It literally brings you back to earth. Some free practices you could try are:

  • Walking barefoot outside on natural ground (grass, sand, etc.). This is probably the most talked-about earthing technique. You can simply just stand in your garden for a few minutes listening to nature.

  • Gardening without gloves. I love gardening; I do not love muddy hands. But it’s so beneficial to put that aside and get your fingernails dirty in soil!

  • Natural water. Whether it be open water swimming, standing in the sea, or even just a puddle! Use earth's natural energy in water to really feel some improvements.

  • Forest bathing (known as ‘shin-rin yoku’ in Japan). You don’t literally have to hug a tree if you don't want to, but you can touch them, sit under them, look at them…Walking through the woods or a forest will reconnect you with nature and restore balance in your body and mind.

I'am aware that the weather here in the UK is not always on our side and if we are being realistic, not many people want to stand on the cold, damp grass in the depths of winter with no shoes on. There is an alternative (although confession time: this part is not free!): there are grounding or earthing mats available to purchase. Putting your feet on them or lying on them will have the same effect as natural grounding exercises, and the great thing is you can do it in the warmth of your own home!

I personally can recommend the earthing mat from Down to Ground. I use this one in my Reiki practice for people who suffer with chronic pain or need rebalancing. Simply plug it in, place your feet on it and let it connect you to the Earth's natural energy without stepping foot outside. It goes without saying that it’s amazing to get out in nature as much as you can, but it's also amazing to be able to ground any time you want at home; whilst watching TV, doing your hair, or eating dinner

  1. Crystals

Crystals and Reiki - the perfect partnership.

Crystals! The aesthetically pleasing but science-backed natural gemstones of the earth. Have you ever sat and held a crystal and focused on it - I mean REALLY focused on it? You will literally feel it buzzing, vibrating, or tingling. This is their electrical charge and their energetic frequency aligning with your energy. Most people reading this will have a crystal to hand, whether it be a random one in a drawer somewhere that someone gifted you years ago, or a selection of them on the bedside table. They are so cheap to buy if you want to build up your crystal collection (I have crystals starting from 50p in my treatment room FYI!)

Crystals don't have to take up any of your valuable time. You can carry them round in your pocket when you go to work, wear them as jewellery, or keep them under your pillow. You can also meditate with them; hold one in your non-dominant hand and use it as your focus and feel its energy.<br />

Just remember to regularly cleanse and recharge your crystals; they are like rechargeable batteries: they can't run on empty!

Did you know that as well as my Reiki practice, I also offer crystal healing. I am an advanced certified crystal healing practitioner and offer face-to-face crystal therapy sessions. Every ailment, body part, chakra, etc. has a crystal that perfectly aligns with it. I can offer advice on crystals for certain mental, physical, spiritual, or metaphysical issues. 1. Affirmations

Flood your brain with positive affirmations during your Reiki practice.

I feel like affirmations get a real bad rap; they are cliche or cheesy and give off a ‘live, laugh, love’ vibe. But positive affirmations can be a valuable, psychological tool if used daily.

Choose some affirmations and write them down so you can refer to them daily. Repeat them out loud - or in your head - for a couple of minutes a day (or a few times daily to really ingrain them into your brain). The great thing about affirmations is you can do them when you are having a shower, cleaning, walking, making breakfast…you don’t have to set time aside! You can use them before, after, or even during your Reiki practice to really amplify the energy.

Say affirmations in the present tense and as if they are already true. The affirmations you choose depend on your desired outcome. Are you implementing them to build confidence? To set boundaries and protect your energy? To help your anxiety? Tailor them to your needs.

Examples to inspire you:

  • “I am abundant in all areas of my life.”

  • “I am safe and in control of my thoughts and emotions.”

  • “I am proud of my progress and excited about my future.”

  • “I am enough just as I am.”

So that's my round-up of 5 simple, time effective, and free Reiki practices that you can try at home. Incorporating these will:

  • Add calm and contentment

  • Improve stress levels and anxiety

  • Improve concentration and focus

  • Improve physical health and reduce pain

  • Improve sleep

  • Lower blood pressure

  • Enhance self-awareness

  • Increase resilience

  • Open up your third eye

  • Generally just make life more manageable!

All of these Reiki-inspired practices will encourage you to live more in the present. They will give your brain a rest from thinking about the past and the future.

When you find your groove with your chosen practices, make it your aim to stick to it; it takes 21 days to form a habit and after that they should become second nature to you.
